Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Sticking my snout where it no longer belongs

Hmmm. Another few months go by, another attention seeker getting all the attention he wants. (Or the same one--does it matter?).

Sometimes he gets your dander up, sometimes he gets a humorous response. Sometimes he is abusive. Mostly he is illiterate and boorish.

But the biggest rise he gets are from the numerous "hey, let's stop replying to" threads that get a dozen responses. Responding to a cease and desist request is neither ceasing nor desisting: it is only keeping the bullshit flowing. Mind you, I've posted the same request in the past, and the thought is a good one. It just doesn't work.

Besides, the guy morphs and we are back to square one.

Humble suggestion: let it go. If you don't like him, don't click his thread. Don't bother to leave a reply. Just move on. If you want to engage him, go for it. If you want to leave a witty retort to indicate that he is meaningless, great.

But let it go. He is just one fish in this pond. If you don't like him, don't feed him.

And if he gets 100 reads, just let it go. Click on a thread that interests you instead and enjoy yourself--enjoy this place.

And keep Mr. Wolf in your thoughts instead.

Hey Bill, I never engage with said person nor do I feed him.
I also never read his posts. The sad part through all this is when someone genuinley comes along as a newbie you just don't now for sure. Usually though it only takes a couple of posts
to figure it out.

Paranoia begets paranoia.

Of course, "just because you're paranoid/ don't mean they're not after you."

From the movie Primer ( a real good low budget flick)

"What's worse, thinking you're being paranoid or knowing you should be?"

It's all good man. The good people such as rob and yourself included come back and brighten up this place. Guys like Arb,SDH,Elbow, Will Tell and of course Dire will be here to keep this thing going as long as ther is a GD forum here.
There will always be trolls. They will try to poisen this place with there racist and derogatory remarks.

Hopefully more new people hop on board here as opposed to the trolls driving evryone over to the hook. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I occasionaly lurk there.

Not that ANYONE cares, but reading your post made me recognize that just over a yr ago I was lurker reading this stuff and thinking, "whoa, these guys are great" (Ashes, Dire, Arbuthnot & McGlone were the ones I saw the most of) and wouldn't it be nice to get involved...

Now, one yr later, if I may, it appears a few folks think the same about me (don't worry, I know a bunch that think FAR LESS about me). My point is that ANYONE can join up and by their own behavior: 1) become famous (????), and 2) make friends (???), and 3) get all the DEAD they ever needed...or wanted.

A very courageous philosopher once said, "Ain't it the Truth, ain't it the Truth."

good people. Makes the day that much better.

Wharf, you're right, sometimes you can't be sure if it's a seasoned troll trying to take advantage or a new acquaintance (I really don't like the term 'newbie', it's so derogatory - we were all newbies once) with a genuine query. Probably it's best to give the benefit of the doubt (unless your antennae are really twitching) and treat the new poster as a friend. I know I've said this before, but if they turn out not to be genuine who comes off looking worse? You for being friendly, or them for being a manipulative asshole?

I completely agree Rob. I think the experience of Ms. Brown was a classic example of why you should not assume that a new poster is a troll in disguise. If they are a troll they will reveal themselves as such in due time.

On a completely different subject, I sent you an email late last week (sdh provided me with your address) did you receive it?

yes rob the friendly route is the way to go.
one thing i do is when i see a new name on the board check to see if they ever posted before. Then read thier post.
If you get a dumb reply after your reply time to move on.

Does that mean I should stop with the dumb replies??

;)

The whole T&S thing was reminding me of an old cult classic with Don Johnson . . . yes you guessed it "A Boy and his Dog"

It all becomes a moebius strip of good intentions nullified by its own futility.

Now, put that in your pipe and smoke it because it took me about 89 seconds or so to come up with it.

How ya' doin', man?

The metaphysical ramifications wreaked by the nihilism of a didactic mindset often cause a latent subliminal acclimation that in turn fosters naught but a syllogistic retrograde toward pseuopedantic discussions that are predisposed to tautological retorts and ontological redactions that penultimately serve to refract the very substance of all quintessential ruminatory explication, thus defying the very laws of its own syntax.

In other words, the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

I mean that, you bastard nerd.

That may very well be the most monumentally pretentious heap of steaming, fly-infested bovine by-product that I have ever read, including that goddamned over-rated ream of toilet paper that was called The Da Vinci Code, and that says a LOT.

Well-played, ork-day.

I assume, Nerdy Gurdy man, that you refer to my dissertation? Alas, I must concur.

Play nice or I will write another painful sentence and mail it to you.

Well said, my spectral friend. Though I've tried to avoid direct confrontation I'm as guilty as anyone of keeping the Tito&Smokey Circus on the road. Someone, somewhere is getting a lot of mileage out of this. If you join in this game you can't win; you can't even break even. Really it's best not to play at all.

I owe you an email and I'll try and work up to that. The Big D is definitely in my thoughts.
